The Fowler Memorial Clock

Sir John Fowler was the respected landowner of Braemore Estate but is more famously known as the engineer of the Forth Rail Bridge. He died in 1898, but the death of his son (Captain Alan Fowler, in 1899) shortly thereafter prompted the family to create a memorial for him in the village.

The Fowler Memorial clock is situated in the middle of Ullapool, located on the intersection of Quay Street and West Argyll Street. It was originally located on the corner of Quay and Argyll Street but was moved in the 1960s due to complaints that it was causing traffic congestion. Some say the move disrupted the mechanisms so that the keeping of accurate time was affected. It was gifted to the Parish Council in 1922 by Lady Alice Fowler, who offered a £100 investment in its upkeep. The clock operated by being hand-wound until 1995 when it was electrified.

It remains one of the important corner-stones and meeting points of the village today.
