Not far from Rest and Be Thankful, overlooking Loch Fyne at the junction of three roads, twenty-five large glistening white quartz pebbles and one in the middle form the 'Tinkers’ Heart'.
This is the only permanent commemorative monument for the Scottish Travelling community, whose ancient heritage is shared through their oral tradition. This tradition tells of the heart first made to commemorate those travellers that died at Culloden in the 18th century.
A hundred years later, travellers’ weddings and christenings were celebrated there and today, the site not only remains an important meeting place for the travelling community but it is increasingly used as a romantic location by other visitors.
Following a successful petition by traveller and author Jess Smith in 2014 , the Tinkers’ heart was officially recognised as a scheduled monument in 2015.
